The attached file is a picture of someone's guinea pig that just came from the store. Would you want to support that? If not, then avoid getting pet store piggies.
Pet store piggies are usually sick in some way. Do you think that pet stores actually care about their animals? They only care about business. Remember, pet store-owning is a business, and does not mean that they have to actually care for their animals. Also, guinea pigs that are males are usually put in with females, and females are usually put in with females because pet stores usually don't know anything about guinea pigs.
Also, guinea pigs' breeders usually take horrible care of their guinea pigs. Just look at this: www.guineapigcages.com/forum/kitchen/23746-why-not-get-petstore-guinea-pig-pictures-new-post.html
Isn't it terrible? Like pet store-owning, breeding is a business, meaning that they may not even care about their animals. They only care about making money for themselves.
What can I do about it?
If you notice anything wrong in a pet store with the animals, tell someone about it there. Don't be afraid to. Also, if the pet store is a crappy one, tell the manager about the problems and say that you won't buy from there until it is fixed. You could also bring some more people with you if you'd like that agree and won't buy from there until it is fixed.
Spread the word. Tell people why not to buy from crappy pet stores. Make sure to support all of your reasons why.
REPORT. Report breeders who keep their animals in terrible condition to animal control. This will help because less piggies will get hurt, diseased, or catch germs.
ADOPT. If you know any places to get your pets besides a pet store, make sure you do that instead. There are some great rescues out there. Try www.petfinder.com . They usually list a ton of rescues near you. If there is no Humane Society that has guinea pigs or rescues near you, make sure you choose a pet store that takes care of all of their animals.
